What is obesity?

Obesity occurs when an individual has an increased amount of body fat. In other words, if a person is diagnosed as overweight or obese, its typically means that he or she has too much body fat, making the body weight greater than what is considered healthy. Most obese people are significantly overweight. However, obesity also occurs in people who are not overweight, but have more body fat than muscle. Obesity is considered a chronic illness. It is on the rise and is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

What causes someone to become overweight?
Many factors can play a role in becoming overweight or obese. These factors include: behaviors, such as eating too many calories or not getting enough physical activity environment and culture genes. In addition to our increasing sedentary lifestyle, recent research has suggest that adults not involved in exercise program will lose about 5 pounds of muscle per decade, while at the same time adding 15 pounds of fat per decade.

Is obesity a disease?
Some doctors and other healthcare professionals routinely describe obesity as a disease. Other scientists say that obesity doesn't fit the usual definition of disease. But there is no debate over whether obesity increases the risk for other diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, osteoarthritis and many other medical conditions.

How can overweight and obesity be prevented?
Individuals should regularly visit their healthcare providers and know what their healthy weight should be.
Exercise: Regular exercise can help individuals maintain a healthy weight. It has also been shown to control diabetes, reduce stress, and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Diet: Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is essential to maintaining a healthy weight.

How is obesity treated?

The method of treatment depends on your level of obesity, overall health condition, and readiness to lose weight. Treatment may include a combination of diet, exercise, behavior modification, and sometimes weight-loss drugs. In some cases of extreme obesity, bariatric surgery may be recommended.
